Online pH Meter Overview

The pH value indicates whether a solution is acidic, neutral or alkaline. A value below 7 is acidic, 7 is neutral and above 7 is alkaline. In industrial plants, maintaining the correct pH value is important for treatment quality, chemical consumption, product quality, corrosion control and environmental compliance.

An Online pH Meter continuously receives the signal from a pH electrode installed in the process line, tank, chamber or sampling arrangement. The meter converts the electrode signal into a readable pH value and displays it on the panel. Depending on the model, it can also provide relay output, alarm indication, analog output or RS485 Modbus communication.

UMA Industries manufactures and supplies pH monitoring instruments for industries that need dependable measurement, easy calibration and practical field operation. Customers can select the instrument according to sensor type, mounting style, output requirement, process condition and control application.

Working Principle of Online pH Meter

A pH electrode generates a small millivolt signal according to the hydrogen-ion activity of the solution. The pH transmitter or controller receives this signal, compensates it as required and converts it into a pH reading. The reading is shown on the display and can be used for alarm or process-control action.

In a typical installation, the pH sensor is fitted in a process tank, pipeline, flow cell or sampling pot. The Online pH Meter is installed on the panel or control board, where the operator can see the reading and adjust settings. Relay output can be used for acid dosing, alkali dosing, alarm buzzer or pump control according to the process logic.

Where plant automation is required, RS485 Modbus or analog output may be used to connect the instrument with PLC, SCADA or data-logging systems.

Main Features and Benefits

  1. Continuous pH monitoring: Real-time pH indication helps operators monitor water or process liquid without manual sampling every time.
  2. Digital display: Clear pH value display improves readability in industrial panels and treatment plants.
  3. Relay output: The relay can be used for alarm, dosing pump, solenoid valve or process interlock.
  4. Easy calibration: Standard buffer calibration helps maintain measurement accuracy during routine operation.
  5. Panel-mounted design: The instrument is suitable for control panels, automation panels and plant monitoring boards.
  6. Industrial application: Useful for ETP, STP, RO, DM plant, chemical process, plating and water-treatment systems.
  7. Optional communication: Selected models can be supplied with analog output or RS485 Modbus for automation requirements.

Additional Product Features

  • pH range commonly from 0 to 14 pH
  • Suitable for online and continuous measurement
  • High and low set-point options depending on model
  • Alarm indication for process control
  • Compatible with suitable industrial pH electrodes
  • Easy front-panel setting and calibration
  • Compact panel-mount enclosure

Plating shops use pH monitoring in pretreatment, cleaning, rinsing, chemical tanks and wastewater neutralization systems.

Chemical and Process Industries

Chemical plants use pH measurement to control reaction conditions, dosing, neutralization and process consistency.

Textile and Dyeing Industries

Textile processing, dyeing and washing units use pH control for process baths, wastewater treatment and chemical dosing.

Food and Beverage Industries

Food-processing units use pH monitoring for process control, cleaning systems, wastewater and quality-checking applications where suitable sensors are selected.

Paper, Pulp and Packaging

Paper mills and packaging industries use pH instruments for process water, chemical addition and effluent treatment monitoring.

Cooling Tower and Boiler Water

Industrial utilities use pH monitoring to control corrosion, scaling and chemical dosing in water circuits.

Online pH Meter Calibration Procedure

Calibration is necessary because pH electrodes change over time due to ageing, coating, contamination and process exposure. A properly calibrated Online pH Meter gives more dependable readings in plant operation.

  1. Clean the pH electrode with suitable clean water before calibration.
  2. Use fresh standard pH buffer solutions, commonly pH 4.00, pH 7.00 and pH 9.20 or pH 10.00 as required.
  3. Dip the electrode in pH 7.00 buffer and wait for a stable reading.
  4. Adjust the zero or calibration setting according to the instrument manual.
  5. Rinse the electrode with clean water and gently remove excess liquid.
  6. Dip the electrode in pH 4.00 or pH 9.20 buffer according to the application range.
  7. Wait for reading stability and adjust the slope setting if available.
  8. Repeat the check in pH 7.00 buffer to confirm calibration.
  9. Install the electrode back in the process and observe the reading.
  10. Record calibration date, buffer values and final readings for maintenance reference.

For reliable calibration, always use good-quality buffer solution and do not mix used buffer back into the original bottle. Replace the electrode if response becomes very slow, unstable or impossible to calibrate.

Installation Guidelines

  • Install the controller in a dry panel location away from direct water spray.
  • Mount the pH electrode where it remains properly immersed in the sample.
  • Avoid installing the electrode in dead zones where liquid does not circulate.
  • Use a flow cell or sampling pot where direct tank installation is not suitable.
  • Keep sensor cable away from heavy power cables, VFD cables and high-noise wiring.
  • Provide proper earthing to the panel and instrument system.
  • Use suitable electrode material according to process liquid, temperature and pressure.
  • Make sure the electrode can be removed easily for cleaning and calibration.

Precautions for Online pH Meter

  • Do not allow the pH electrode glass bulb to dry.
  • Do not clean the electrode with hard tools or abrasive material.
  • Do not use damaged or expired buffer solution for calibration.
  • Do not install the sensor where air bubbles continuously touch the glass bulb.
  • Do not expose the instrument to water leakage inside the panel.
  • Do not run electrode cable with high-voltage or motor cables.
  • Clean coating, oil, scale or chemical deposits from the electrode regularly.
  • Use suitable storage solution when the electrode is removed from service.
  • Check calibration more frequently in harsh chemical applications.
  • Replace the pH electrode when readings become unstable even after cleaning and calibration.
