Counter with Timer
UMA Industries manufactures and supplies reliable Counter with Timer for industrial production counting, machine stroke counting and machine running-time monitoring. This instrument works as a 6-digit production counter and also records machine run time in HH:MM:SS format, making it useful for press machines, packaging machines, cutting machines, assembly machines, special-purpose machines and general industrial automation panels.
Our Counter with Timer is designed for applications where the user needs both total count and machine running time in one compact device. The counter increases the count whenever a pulse, sensor signal, limit switch signal or machine stroke signal is received. The timer starts when machine activity is detected and adds the active running time to the total machine run hour record.

Counter with Timer Overview
A production counter is used to count machine strokes, product pieces, batch quantity, process cycles or sensor pulses. A run-hour timer is used to calculate how long the machine actually remains active. The Counter with Timer combines both functions in one panel-mounted instrument, reducing the need for separate counter and timer units.
In many factories, only production quantity is recorded, but the actual machine running time is not recorded properly. This creates difficulty in calculating machine utilization, operator performance, downtime, production rate and maintenance planning. With a Counter with Timer, the user can see the total production count and also check the total running time of the machine.
The instrument can be connected with a proximity sensor, reed switch, limit switch, photo sensor, microswitch, relay contact or PLC pulse output depending on the machine design. It is suitable for machine builders, production shops, panel manufacturers, maintenance teams and factories that need simple production monitoring without a complex SCADA system.

Working Principle of Counter with Timer
The Counter with Timer receives a pulse from a sensor, switch, relay contact or machine output. Each valid pulse increases the production count by one. The same pulse or machine activity signal is also used to determine whether the machine is running.
When a stroke or pulse is detected, the internal timer starts counting seconds. If another pulse is received within the selected activity period, the timer continues. If no pulse is detected for the set delay time, the machine is treated as stopped and the timer stops adding running time. This method helps calculate actual run time based on machine activity instead of only power-on time.
The counter value can normally be reset through a reset push button. The run-hour value can be checked by pressing the run-time button, depending on the supplied model. Separate reset logic can also be provided for counter reset and timer reset as per customer requirement.

Applications of Counter with Timer
Power Press Machines
Power press machines use counters to record strokes or produced pieces. The timer helps identify how long the press was actually running during the shift.
Packaging Machines
Packaging lines can use the counter for pouch count, packet count, bottle count, carton count or batch quantity. Run time helps calculate actual output rate.
Cutting and Shearing Machines
Cutting machines, sheet cutters, wire cutters and shearing machines can use this device for cycle counting and active run-hour monitoring.
Injection Moulding and Plastic Machines
The instrument can be used to count moulding cycles, finished pieces or machine strokes where a sensor signal is available.
Assembly Machines
Automatic and semi-automatic assembly machines can use the counter to track part count, cycle count and machine operation time.
Printing and Labeling Machines
Printing machines, label applicators and coding machines can use the counter for piece counting and operational time recording.
SPM and Automation Machines
Special-purpose machines can use the Counter with Timer as a simple production monitor for operator display and maintenance reference.
Conveyor Systems
With a suitable photo sensor or proximity sensor, conveyors can count passing products, cartons, bottles, packets or components.
Machine Maintenance
Run-hour monitoring helps plan preventive maintenance based on actual machine activity instead of only calendar days.
Installation Guidelines
- Install the meter in a suitable panel cut-out as per the supplied enclosure size.
- Use proper input voltage as mentioned on the product label.
- Connect the sensor input according to NPN, PNP, dry contact or pulse input requirement.
- Keep signal wiring separate from heavy motor cables and VFD cables.
- Use shielded cable for long sensor wiring where electrical noise is present.
- Provide proper earthing to the machine control panel.
- Install the sensor where it receives a clean and repeatable pulse.
- Avoid loose mounting of the sensor because vibration can create false pulses.
- Use proper debounce or signal filtering if the machine generates multiple contacts for one stroke.
- Test counter and timer function before starting production use.
Testing and Verification Procedure
A Counter with Timer does not require calibration like an analog measuring instrument, but it should be verified during installation and maintenance to confirm correct counting and timing.
Counter Verification
- Connect the sensor or pulse input properly.
- Manually operate the machine slowly for a fixed number of strokes.
- Compare actual strokes with displayed count.
- Check whether one machine stroke gives only one counter increment.
- If double counting occurs, adjust sensor position or input filtering.
- Repeat the test after adjustment.
Timer Verification
- Reset the timer as per the operating procedure.
- Run the machine for a known duration.
- Compare the displayed run time with a reference stopwatch.
- Stop the machine and check whether the timer stops after the selected delay.
- Repeat the test at normal production speed.
Sensor Verification
- Check sensor LED indication if available.
- Confirm proper sensing gap between sensor and target.
- Make sure the target is stable and not vibrating excessively.
- Check wiring polarity and input type.
- Verify operation at low and high machine speed.

- Do not connect sensor wires without checking input compatibility.
- Do not route sensor cable with high-current motor wiring.
- Do not install the unit where water, oil or coolant can enter the panel.
- Do not reset the counter during production unless required by the process.
- Do not use loose sensors or unstable targets for counting.
- Do not allow relay contact bounce to create multiple counts.
- Use proper sensor mounting brackets for vibration-prone machines.
- Keep the panel closed to avoid dust and electrical contact issues.
- Check wiring terminals periodically during machine maintenance.
