Working Principle – Salt Spray / Corrosion Test (ASTM B117 / ISO 9227)

1. Scope

The salt spray test chamber is used for salt fog testing of
ferrous and non-ferrous metals and for testing organic and inorganic coatings,
paints, platings and surface treatments
. Such tests form the basis for material and product
specifications where corrosion resistance is critical.

2. Apparatus

The complete salt spray / corrosion test apparatus consists of:

  • A closed fog chamber (test chamber)
  • Salt solution reservoir and circulation system
  • Oil-free, dust-free air supply system with regulator and filter
  • One or more atomizing nozzles for generating salt fog
  • Specimen supports / hangers
  • Heaters for heating water and solution
  • Digital instruments and control systems for temperature, humidity, time, pH and fog rate

Temperature Control

The exposure zone of the salt spray chamber for neutral salt spray testing is maintained at
35 ± 2 °C. A digital temperature controller with auto-cut keeps
fogged water temperature within 32–37 °C, and a separate indicator shows
the chamber temperature.

Digital Timer

A 6-digit digital timer (hours and minutes) is provided to monitor the total
test duration and inspection intervals, with at least three digits for hours and two digits for minutes
for long test cycles.

pH Control of Salt Solution

A built-in digital pH meter is used to check and monitor the pH value of the salt solution.
According to ASTM B117, when atomized at 35 °C, the collected solution pH must remain
in the range 6.5 to 7.2. The SST-390A makes it easy to maintain this neutral pH range.

Air Supply

The air supply to the salt spray chamber is oil-free and dust-free.
Air pressure is regulated so that a uniform salt fog is generated. Typical operating pressure is
1.0 kg/cm² ± 0.2 kg/cm².

Atomization and Fog Quantity

The atomizing system creates a fine salt fog / mist. For every
80 cm² (4-inch funnel) horizontal collecting area, the collected solution shall be
1.0 to 2.0 mL per hour, based on an average of at least 16 hours of operation,
as specified in ASTM B117.
