How a pH Controller Works
The pH electrode senses the acidity or alkalinity of the process liquid and sends a low-level electrical signal to the controller. The controller converts the signal into a digital pH value and compares it with the selected set point.
When the measured pH crosses the configured control limit, the appropriate relay operates. This relay can control a dosing pump, solenoid valve, alarm, interposing relay or contactor.
In a two-relay model, one relay can be used for acid dosing and the other for alkali dosing. The control direction, hysteresis and dosing sequence must be verified according to the process requirement.
Acid and Alkali Dosing Control
Acid-Dosing Operation
When the measured pH is higher than the required set point, the acid-dosing relay may operate to reduce the pH. The relay switches OFF after the pH returns to the configured control range.
Alkali-Dosing Operation
When the measured pH is lower than the required set point, the alkali-dosing relay may operate to increase the pH. The relay switches OFF after the required pH range is achieved.
Always verify the dosing chemical, relay-control direction, pump capacity and electrical load before commissioning the system.
