MCS Salt Spray Chamber with Integrated Solution Monitoring

The Salt Spray Test Chamber with Salinity Meter is an
advanced corrosion-testing system manufactured by UMA Industries under
the MCS brand. It is intended for industrial laboratories, quality-control
departments and manufacturers that require better visibility of the
saline solution used for salt fog generation.

A conventional salt spray chamber may require the operator to check the
saline solution with a separate instrument and then manually calculate
how much sodium chloride must be added. The MCS system simplifies this
work by continuously displaying the saline concentration and calculating
the quantity of NaCl to be added according to the configured solution
volume.

The product range is available with an internal chamber capacity from
200 litres to 1000 litres. The physical dimensions,
specimen racks, saline solution tank, control arrangement and automation
level are manufactured according to the user’s specimen size, loading
requirement and testing procedure.

Important distinction: the chamber capacity and the
saline solution tank capacity are separate values. The NaCl correction
meter is configured according to the actual quantity of solution being
prepared, not merely according to the internal volume of the chamber.

MCS SaltBalance Digital Salinity Correction System

The principal differentiating feature of this
Salt Spray Test Chamber with Salinity Meter is the
MCS SaltBalance digital correction system. The instrument uses a
16×2 LCD to provide immediate guidance to the operator.

Live Concentration

The upper LCD line shows the measured saline concentration as
a numerical percentage so that the operator can observe the
solution condition directly from the control panel.

Automatic NaCl Calculation

When the measured concentration is below the preset MCS control
level, the lower line calculates and displays the approximate
quantity of NaCl to be added in grams.

High Concentration Warning

When the concentration exceeds the preset upper control level,
the display warns the operator that the saline concentration
is excessive and requires correction.

Saline: 4.70%
Add NaCl:1500g

For example, when 500 litres of prepared solution measures 4.70% against
the nominal 5.00% target configured in the instrument, the system
calculates an approximate addition of 1,500 grams of NaCl. The operator
receives a direct correction value instead of performing the calculation
separately.

When the solution is inside the preset MCS control band, the lower LCD
line displays a concentration-OK message. If the value rises beyond the
upper setting, the system displays a NaCl-exceeded warning. This operator
guidance helps reduce arithmetic mistakes and supports more consistent
solution preparation.

Why Saline Concentration Monitoring Is Important

Salt fog is generated from a prepared sodium chloride solution. Therefore,
monitoring the solution is an important part of maintaining controlled
test conditions. An incorrectly prepared solution can create avoidable
variation between different batches, operators or test runs.

The Salt Spray Test Chamber with Salinity Meter provides
a visible measurement at the control panel and gives correction guidance
according to solution volume. It does not merely indicate whether salt is
present; it helps the operator determine the approximate quantity required
to return a low-concentration solution toward the configured nominal value.

  • Reduces dependency on handwritten correction calculations.
  • Helps different operators follow the same solution-preparation method.
  • Provides immediate indication when the concentration is low.
  • Displays the required NaCl addition in grams.
  • Provides an alarm message when concentration is excessive.
  • Supports documented internal quality-control procedures.
  • Improves visibility of a critical salt fog preparation parameter.

Integrated pH Meter and Humidity Indication

Online pH Meter

The control panel includes an online digital pH meter for
monitoring the saline solution. The panel-mounted arrangement
reduces dependence on a separate portable meter and allows the
operator to observe pH during solution preparation and routine
checking.

The pH electrode must be cleaned, stored and calibrated using
suitable reference buffers. For information about the instrument,
visit the

MCS digital online pH meter

product page.

Humidity Indication

A digital humidity indication is provided for additional process
visibility. It allows the operator to observe the internal chamber
condition together with temperature, test time, pH and salinity.

Humidity indication is an additional monitoring feature. The
acceptance criteria for any test must always be taken from the
applicable standard, customer drawing, material specification or
approved test procedure.

Standards and Test-Procedure Positioning

The Salt Spray Test Chamber with Salinity Meter can be
manufactured to support salt spray testing procedures associated with
ASTM B117, ISO 9227 and applicable customer-specified JIS procedures.
The applicable test standard, specimen specification and customer
acceptance criteria must be confirmed before testing.

ISO 9227 covers neutral salt spray, acetic acid salt spray and
copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray procedures. The exact chamber
configuration, reagent, temperature, pH, specimen position, exposure
duration and evaluation method depend on the selected procedure and the
product specification.

Official standards references:

ASTM B117 – Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray Fog Apparatus

and

ISO 9227 – Corrosion Tests in Artificial Atmospheres
.

The integrated reservoir salinity reading is an operator-assistance
feature. Final test records should also include the checks required by
the applicable procedure, including collected fog solution, collection
rate, pH, temperature, test duration and specimen observations wherever
applicable.

Operating Procedure

1

Confirm the Required Test Procedure

Review the customer drawing, material specification and applicable
ASTM, ISO or JIS procedure. Confirm solution type, test temperature,
pH, duration, specimen orientation and reporting requirements.

2

Prepare the Saline Solution

Use suitable-quality sodium chloride and purified water as required
by the approved procedure. Prepare the solution in a clean,
non-reactive container or in the designated solution tank.

3

Check the Configured Tank Volume

Confirm that the volume entered or programmed in the saline
concentration meter corresponds to the actual solution quantity.
An incorrect volume setting will produce an incorrect NaCl
correction value.

4

Observe the Salinity Display

Allow the solution to mix uniformly and wait for a stable reading.
The upper line displays concentration. When concentration is low,
the lower line displays the approximate quantity of NaCl to add.

5

Add NaCl Gradually

Add the calculated quantity gradually while circulating or mixing
the solution. Allow the salt to dissolve fully and verify the
concentration again before starting the test.

6

Verify pH and Other Parameters

Check the online pH reading and confirm it using the approved
procedure where required. Verify chamber temperature, compressed
air, fog collectors, solution level and specimen placement.

7

Start and Record the Test

Start fog generation and record all required operating parameters.
Inspect and document the test according to the customer’s approved
inspection and reporting plan.

Calibration and Verification

Reliable indication depends on proper calibration, sensor cleanliness and
solution temperature. The salinity measurement system should be checked
against traceable or known reference solutions at planned intervals.
Verification near the normal working concentration is especially important.

Salinity Meter Verification

  • Clean the sensor before verification.
  • Use freshly prepared or certified reference solutions.
  • Allow the sensor and solution temperature to stabilize.
  • Check readings below, near and above the nominal target.
  • Record observed deviation and corrective action.
  • Do not use a damaged or heavily coated sensor.

pH Meter Calibration

  • Rinse the pH electrode using clean distilled or DM water.
  • Calibrate with suitable fresh buffer solutions.
  • Allow readings to stabilize before adjustment.
  • Never wipe the glass bulb aggressively.
  • Store the electrode in the recommended storage solution.
  • Replace an aged or slow-responding electrode when required.

Calibration frequency depends on the testing workload, contamination,
sensor condition, internal quality procedure and accuracy requirement.
A calibration and maintenance register should be maintained for the
chamber and all associated instruments.

  • Use clean, regulated and suitable compressed air for atomization.
  • Keep the chamber drain, nozzle, collectors and solution lines clean.
  • Do not open the chamber unnecessarily during an active test.
  • Follow the applicable standard and customer test specification.
  • Isolate the electrical supply before maintenance or cleaning.
