ASTM B117 – Salt Spray (Fog) Test
ASTM B117 defines the apparatus and operating conditions required to conduct
salt spray (fog) corrosion testing. SST-108B is designed for laboratory testing
as per ASTM B117 requirements.
ISO 9227 – Corrosion Tests in Artificial Atmospheres
ISO 9227 describes methods for neutral salt spray (NSS) testing and related procedures.
This model can be configured as per ISO requirements based on test needs.
Working Principle of Salt Spray Chamber
In a salt spray chamber, a saline solution (typically 5% NaCl) is atomized into a fine fog inside
a closed chamber. The fog settles uniformly on test specimens maintained at
35 ± 2 °C.
- Compressed air is filtered and regulated
- Salt solution is atomized through special nozzles
- Uniform fog concentration is maintained
- Specimens are exposed for a defined test duration
Corrosion resistance is evaluated based on exposure time and visual inspection of the samples.
Test Control Parameters
Temperature Control
Exposure zone temperature is maintained at 35 ± 2 °C using an automatic temperature controller
with safety cut-off.
pH Control
As per ASTM B117, collected solution pH should remain between 6.5 to 7.2 when atomized around 35 °C.
A pH meter is used to monitor the solution pH.
Air Supply
Air supply must be clean, oil-free and dust-free. Operating pressure is typically maintained at
1.0 kg/cm² ± 0.2 to ensure stable fog formation.
Fog Collection Rate
Fog collection is maintained between 1.0 to 2.0 mL per hour for every
80 cm² of collection area, averaged over at least 16 hours (ASTM B117 reference).
